Interview with the author

What made you write a book about Appcelerator Titanium?
I was contacted by someone at Packt Publishing in regards as to whether I’d be interested in writing a Titanium book as part of their “Cookbook” series. I’d often thought about writing a book and was pretty knee-deep in Titanium at the time (and still am) so it seemed to be the perfect opportunity. I’d also been writing various tutorials for my blog and for mobile.tutsplus.com at the time, so I felt I’d written enough content before to be able to have a pretty good crack at it.

How long did it take to write?
The whole process took around 10-11 months, from my first chapter outline through to the final editing process. I also moved to London from Australia during that time period which took up quite a bit of my time, so in all honesty there was probably 8-9 months of work involved. Writing a book is a very long process – especially when you’re writing about something like Titanium which has changed numerous times during the last year! When I started we were still using Titanium Developer and Ti Studio was a blip on the horizon, so I have had to revise chapters quite a number of times to ensure it was current with the latest SDK’s and tools.

Are you planning on updating the book when new versions of Titanium are released?
There will undoubtably be revisions of the book as new versions and features of Titanium are released – the product is in a constant state of evolution and so I expect that much of the content and source code for the book will be as well.

Any more titles on the horizon?
I am currently in talks with the publisher to write a new, smaller book on Titanium Practices and Patterns. There’s already a number of these books around for Javascript but nothing that applies those principles to Titanium in an easy to read manner, but we will wait and see how this book goes and if it’s received well I will definitely give the second book some serious thought!
